With regard to companies in this sector, which is classified as a high-intensity energy industry, the cost of energy remains an important part of the global cost of production, thus having repercussions on competitiveness.
The glass sector is characterised by high-energy consumption per product unit, which is mainly due to melting processes which can absorb up to approximately 80% of total consumption, equivalent to approximately 2,000 GWh per annum of electricity, 855,000,000 stm3 per annum of natural gas and 130,000,000 Kg per annum of oil fuel.
Reduction in this consumption, by way of optimising production processes, applying high-efficiency heating techniques and heat recovery, becomes the centre point to guarantee sustainability in the sector.
Among possible interventions, are:
- optimising the smelting furnace by redefining the structural layout and improving the thermal insulation systems

- thermal recovery of smelting furnace fumes
- automatic advanced management systems for the composition process of raw materials mixtures, humidity control, temperature, loading material and percentage of scraps used
- preheating the frit and scrapping glass
- installing inverters.
